Superintendent's Message

Dear Youngstown Community School Friends and Family,

Welcome to another new school year. The 2017-2018 school year promises to be a great one. I would like to take this opportunity to say I am honored and very excited to be your Superintendent. The Youngstown Community School is one of the finest schools in our area, with a rich history and tradition of excellence that we are looking to strengthen and expand upon.

As we begin another school year, we look forward to you being a part of our Youngstown Community family and hope you become involved in our school. The Youngstown Community School is known for its incredible staff with their commitment to excellence. To those new to our school community, we are looking forward to your contributions to our students and team. We are so fortunate to have a school for which we can be proud of, with students, staff, families and the community coming together to support our mission and to inspire excellence. We will move forward together to begin another chapter in the history of our school, with an eye on building on our successes of the past. We will continue to focus on several priority areas to help us focus our work in making our school a premier school in the Mahoning Valley.

Priority 1: High Academic Standards - All students will have access to a challenging and rigorous instructional program that is aligned to Common Core Standards and embeds 21 st century skill demands.

Priority 2: Safe School Climate - The school will support and sustain a safe, nurturing, respectful environment where staff and students are supported to bring out the best in each other.

Priority 3: Fiscal Awareness - The school will provide an educationally sound and fiscally responsible budget that supports students in achieving our mission and is reflective of the community’s support for our school.

Priority 4: Community Involvement - The Youngstown Community School will engage the community in meaningful ways so as to foster support of programs and services.

I take seriously my responsibility for creating pathways for learning so that we can bring out the unique gifts in each student. What we will be doing in our classrooms matters; we will be part of creating memorable, magical moments with our children, while providing a quality education. We will be developing students who are engaged in our classrooms, as well as in our community.

Schools are a reflection of a community and in the Youngstown Community School, the success of our students comes as a result of the unwavering support of our parents, students, staff and community.

Please know that we welcome the community at all of our student events, and we hope that you will be part of our school. For any information on how to become a part of the Youngstown Community School, you may contact the office at 330-746-2240 or e-mail me at rsmith@ycs.k12.oh.us. I welcome your suggestions as to how the school can better serve your needs and how we can improve upon our many successes. I am eager, anxious and ready to make this year the best ever!!!

Sincerely,

Rachael Smith
